Bier House II is situated on the edge of Usonia, and was built by original members who left the community and then later returned.
Through extensive conversations, we learned that the current owner was highly pragmatic and had little nostalgia for the existing interior. But did have larger ambitions for the emotions the home would invoke after a careful reduction and compression of its existing detail.
The project became about the art of editing, and achieving a sense of calm and continuity: An interior that was a kind of amalgam of art space and soothing retreat with an atmosphere of calm. Ultimately, our client’s ability to partner, coupled with sharing of ideas, helped us realize his vision in sometimes surprising ways.
“Architecture isn’t just about creating new buildings, sometimes its about retuning what’s already there..”
– John Pawson
