Apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright and one of the founders of Usonia in Pleasantville, David Henken designed and built multiple structures on this acreage for living and work.
But the building that had originally served as his studio, had been left to weather and stagnate over time, and was in need of refreshing.
We and our clients decided to stage a multi-phased project, starting with the studio building and then moving on to the main house. Our essential challenge with the studio was refurbishing existing surfaces while updating equipment and achieving our clients’ desire to honor the structure’s evocation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy and aesthetic.
“The longer I live, the more beautiful life becomes. If you foolishly ignore beauty, you will soon find yourself without it. Your life will be impoverished. But if you invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life.”
